A Fairfax Asphalt estimate starts with a site visit where we measure the project area and talk through what you’re looking for. We evaluate key factors like soil conditions, drainage, and how the surface will be used, since those details help determine proper asphalt thickness and overall design. From there, we provide a clear written quote based on the scope of work.

Once you approve your estimate, the project typically takes place in two main stages.
On the first day, often called “basing day,” we remove the existing driveway and excavate roughly 4–6 inches to prepare a stable foundation. The area is then graded and backfilled with compacted gravel to create a strong base layer. In most cases, the driveway can still be used for normal access during this stage.
About two weeks later, we return for paving day, where the new asphalt surface is installed and finished.
After installation, we recommend staying off the driveway for a couple of days and avoiding parking on it for about a week. During warmer weather, extra care is recommended as the surface continues to set. Asphalt continues to fully cure over time, with the full curing process taking up to two years.

Yes. Fairfax Asphalt provides a 5-year workmanship warranty on residential driveway installations. If there is ever a concern related to installation quality, we will inspect the issue and work with you to find a fair and practical solution.
With proper installation and maintenance, a new asphalt driveway can last 20 to 35 years. Lifespan depends on factors such as soil conditions, usage, and ongoing maintenance. Regular seal coating can help extend both the appearance and durability of the surface.
For residential driveways, industry recommendations typically call for 2 to 2.5 inches of compacted asphalt. In cases where additional strength is needed, asphalt can be applied in layers to achieve proper density and durability.
We use a recycled Class #5 base material, made from crushed recycled asphalt and concrete, forming a compacted gravel foundation.

Yes, cracking is a normal part of asphalt over time. Ground movement from seasonal freezing and thawing causes expansion and contraction, which can lead to surface cracks. This does not necessarily indicate improper installation.
Other factors such as heavy use, edge support, and natural elements like tree roots can also contribute.
Basic maintenance includes keeping the surface clean with a stiff broom and rinsing with water as needed. Spills should be cleaned promptly using mild detergent and water.
We recommend seal coating every three years to help protect the surface and extend its lifespan. Addressing small cracks early is also important to prevent moisture from entering the base layer.
The edges of an asphalt driveway are its most vulnerable areas. Proper support is essential to prevent cracking or breakdown over time. It’s important that surrounding soil or landscaping is maintained at or near driveway height to help protect the edges.
Damage can occur from sharp or concentrated pressure points such as kickstands, jacks, ladders, or heavy stationary loads, especially during hot weather when asphalt is softer. Reducing prolonged heavy pressure on the surface helps maintain its condition.
Cracks should be filled as soon as possible, ideally before winter. This prevents water from entering beneath the surface and causing further damage. Seal coating and crack repair services can help maintain the driveway over time.
