We are experts in the asphalt paving industry with over 40 years of experience.
How much base is necessary for my driveway? And what types of base do you use?
On sandy soils, 4-5″ of compacted base is recommended, on clay soils, we recommend 6-8″ of base. We use a recycled base called Class #7; it’s a mixture of recycled asphalt and recycled concrete. The recycled parts are crushed to create a 3/4″ gravel base.
How thick should the asphalt be after it is compacted?
The Minnesota Builders Association recommends 2-2 1/2″ of well compacted asphalt is necessary for residential driveway. Any less than that may not withstand the daily traffic, if you prefer more than that it should be done in 2 layers to obtain proper density of the asphalt.
Are there any differences in the kinds of asphalt used for driveways? And what is recommended?
Yes, for most residential driveways a finer aggregate mix is usually preferred consisting of 1/2″ or smaller, bituminous mix design for a smoother looking finish. For driveways with higher traffic or heavier vehicles, like an RV or boat, we recommend using a courser mix consisting of 3/4″ rock mixture. This mis will still have a smooth texture; however, it will appear rockier, but withstand the traffic much better.
What is the process of replacing our new driveway if we decide to go ahead with Fairfax Asphalt?
Replacing your driveway is a two-step process; the first day our crew will come out to do the tear-out of the existing driveway and installation of the Class #7 base. We then let the driveway base settle for about one week; in situations where all the sub soil is soft or extra saturated it is likely that we will prefer to let it set an extra 1-2 weeks. During this time you can drive and park on the driveway like normal. When the driveway is done settling we will come back to pave the asphalt, after that we recommend staying off the driveway with cars for 2-3 days and not to park on the driveway for about one week.
How long can I expect my new driveway to last?
With proper construction, we have seen our installed driveways last from 20-35 years. The life expectancy of your driveway can vary greatly depending on the soil it is built on and general maintenance.
How long of a guaranty does Fairfax Asphalt, Inc provide? And what does your guaranty cover?
Our standard guaranty for new driveway installation is 5 years. We don’t have fine print hidden in our contract; if you feel you have an integrity problem with your driveway, call us and we will meet with you to discuss the issue and come up with a solution to satisfy the concern.
